Summer Greetings from the Principal 2020

Summer Greetings from the Principal 2020

Täby 2020-06-08

Dear Parents and students,

We are excited to greet our students tomorrow for our end of term celebrations for years 4-8. As always in our traditional manner, we will be celebrating our success, listening to our students perform, awarding students for Academic success, effort and thanking our staff and students for making IESTäby such a  wonderful school to belong to. This year we have planned our day to comply with safety recommendations and we will not be meeting in assemblies in the Student lounge in Senior school. Instead our students will be based in their mentor classroom and will be streamed live or through recordings of the performances, awards and speeches.

Our year 6 Leavers Lunch will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, a special day  to thank mentors, enjoy a fond farewell to Junior school and a chance to look forward to next year and the move up to Senior school in year 7.

On Wednesday we will be celebrating the year 9 Leavers Lunch and Graduation, with pomp and ceremony in our IESTäby tradition with Caps and Gowns, diplomas, awards, musical performances and speeches. Even though parents are so sadly unable to attend this year, they will be able to see a recording of the event streamed the next day.

May I take this opportunity to thank all parents for your patience, support and trust during these difficult times. Everyone has been doing their best...Thank you and please congratulate your children who have shown grit, hard work and amazing adaptability to new ways of learning and have really done their best this school year.

Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing summer holiday.

Welcome back on August 17th to a new and exciting school year.

Best Regards

Ms. Gina Ericsson

Principal’s Greetings August 2020

Welcome Back to school for the 2020-21 school year at IESTäby

Dear parents and students,

Welcome back

We are delighted to welcome all of our students to the  IEST School Start with our traditional assemblies on Monday 17th August. This year due to Covid 19 we will not be meeting in year groups in the Student Lounge for our assemblies, but in the individual mentor classes. However, we will share a video of the assembly with presentations from myself, management and HOYs for all students to watch with their own Mentors and class. Unfortunately, we are not able to welcome our new year 4 parents to join us in the assemblies in the classrooms in school.

Safety at IEST

A new school year presents challenges and opportunities for everyone. We will continue to follow the FHM/ Swedish Health Authorities recommendations for schools, reminding all staff and students to stay home if they have Covid 19 symptoms until 2 days symptom free, pay attention to personal hygiene routines of washing hands regularly, using hand gel and paying attention to social distancing when entering the lunch rooms. We follow closely the guidance from our IES Crisis team and School Medical officer for IES in terms of our routines and practices. We will keep you updated using Schoolsoft of any news or changes to our school routines, just like we did during the spring term. Please feel free to contact management, the student care team or mentors with any questions or concerns.

New staff, training and preparation

We have had a busy and productive summer, preparing for the new school year. We have recruited some great new teachers from Sweden and abroad who have been taking part in our Induction and In service weeks since August 5th. All our staff have been busy this week with shared practice, both academic and pastoral and of course getting school ready for our students' arrival next week. The staff are really  looking forward to greeting all our students “old and new” into school on Monday 17th August.

Building improvements

Every summer we spend time renovating, painting and making improvements on our two school buildings. In addition, this year we have built a new fence outside at Junior school to improve our playground area and we have replaced some of the school furniture. We have also purchased new furniture in the lunchroom in Senior school and we are delighted with the new look and soundproofing improvements. We have also renovated the new Aula in Senior school to be used as a PE Studio for years 8 and 9 in addition to them using the sports hall at Grindtorpshallen.

Back to school nights and SPTS

Due to Covid 19 we will be changing some of our traditional ways of meeting parents for information and feedback this term. We will not be holding the year 4 parent student meetings (SPTS) in school next week, but digitally instead and for Back to School Nights normally in w.34 and 35. We will be sending out information slides and video clips from our mentors for you instead.

More information is to come shortly from your Head of Years and Mentors, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Greetings from the Principal October 2019

Dear students and parents,

We have had a wonderful start to the school year. Yes, our school won the Barbara Bergström Best IES school award for 2019.

Congratulations to everyone at our amazing school: to all our students, staff and parents who make IEST so special.

I am looking forward to seeing parents this week in school for our SPTs. At IEST we really value this mid- term meeting for feedback and goal setting. This is a great opportunity to set goals for academic success and social well being in school. I always promote our Approaches to learning, ATLs as key tools to support students achieving their goals in school. Which ATLs help you succeed?

At IEST we promote an expert approach to learning where grit and learning by our mistakes leads to understanding and growth. Good luck with your meetings and goal setting this week.

School update: The first half of the term has passed by so quickly, students have been active in studies and activities in and outside of school:

Junior school

Year 6 students had Aesthetic days at Skavlöten with creative outside learning task which students really engaged with.

We also had an outside sports day for all of junior school: staff and students really enjoyed the walks and fresh air in our beautiful countryside around Waxholm: most impressive.

Junior school SO dept organised their annual museum visits: a great opportunity to use our Stockholm museums for added learning experiences.

Thank you to the Jr English dept for organising the first House competition!

More news to come on this...

Student Voice

Both Jr and Sr Student Council and Buddies have been very active this school year.  At Sr we have their fantastic newspaper and the Student Council board have come up with several great ideas. Likewise at JR, the suggestion box and SC and Buddies are really helping  promote student voice. The JR school newspaper is coming out soon. Thank you!

Senior school

At Sr we have enjoyed Sports day with orienteering and several trips out to museums by SO and Science. We have listened to speakers in school about health and the environment and the Holocaust for year 9s.

The year 7 and 9s have started the PTA sponsored leadership programme and our year 8s are preparing for PRAO in November.

Yes, a busy half term for us all, so hopefully the autumn holiday next week will give our students and staff a well deserved break.

Autumn Break

I do hope everyone will find time to recharge their batteries, enjoy the glorious autumn colours and be rested and refreshed to come back on Monday 4th November to continue our learning journey together at IEST.

A special thank you to all our teachers and staff for a great start to the school year.

Wishing everyone a lovely autumn break.

Best Regards

Senior School Sports Day - The Great Outdoors

Senior School Sports Day - The Great Outdoors

On Wednesday, the 11th of September, all Senior School students participated in a Sports Day that centred around the theme of ‘outdoor life’. Our Year 9 students were based out in the beautiful surrounds of Vaxholm, where they participated in some orienteering and also enjoyed a canoeing session. Year 8 students went out to Skavlöten where, in addition to some orienteering, they also participated in some games that utilised the outdoor environment. The Year 7’s combined some nature activities with some ‘City Orienteering’ around Gamla Stan.

The day, which provided some great teaching and learning opportunities, aimed to engage students in nature with the hope that they will continue to pursue recreational activities in this environment throughout their life. An added benefit was that it gave all classes the chance to strengthen relationships within the class at the beginning of the school year. The teachers certainly enjoyed working with the students on this day and we hope a lot of fun was had by all!
